Are You Stuck in a Decorating Rut?

Bookshelf

Do you ever think your home just feels boring? It’s just…the same? You want to change it up but you don’t know how? You’re in a decorating funk, my friend. I’ve been there too.

It’s kind of like how you dress. Often, I put together the same outfit combinations over and over. Same shirt with the same pants. Same shoes. Then, when I try an out-of-my-usual combination, and it works, it’s a revelation. Why didn’t I do that before?

The same can happen with your decorating style. You just have to get out of your usual way of doing things. Here are five ideas to pull you out of that decorating rut.

1. Rearrange the furniture

Challenge yourself to rearrange your furniture. This simple trick can make a huge difference. Even if it seems like you can’t make any other combination than what you currently have, you probably can. Just give it a try. It’s amazing how just moving your couch can make your living room feel like a whole new space.

2. Switch rooms

Just because you have that armchair in the living room doesn’t mean it needs to stay there. Maybe it would work better in the guest room? When rearranging, don’t just keep everything in the same room. Move furniture, lamps and decorative items between rooms. It can really help you feel like you’re making a big change. If you want to get super crazy, why not making the dining room the living room and vice versa? I have friends who actually swap out the purpose of their rooms with the seasons. You might like it!

3. Use the walls

The walls are an often-neglected area for decorating. Probably because hanging art is a big pain. Every time I hang something, I never get it right on the first try. It’s always crooked or off-center, and I have to start all over. I get it. Hanging stuff on the walls  is irking. But when you do…oh the difference.

4. Make a list

If you look around your house and all you see is a bunch of to-do projects, it can get overwhelming–fast. So make a list. Organizing your projects—big and small—can make it all seem much more manageable. Setting deadlines for each project is also a good idea for you decorating procrastinators out there.

5. Shop savvy

Maybe you’re stuck in a decorating rut because you’re afraid of spending too much money? Between curtains, couches, art and rugs, decorating your home can get expensive. That doesn’t mean you have to live in a space you no longer love. This is where DIY and secondhand shopping can come in really handy. If you’re drooling over expensive bed headboards, maybe there’s a way you can make it yourself? Or, if you keep an eye out, maybe you’ll spot the perfect dining room table at a thrift store for half the price. Do-it-yourself projects and secondhand shopping can seriously save you money and still make your home feel fresh. I have a bunch of do-it-yourself home projects here on the blog to give you some inspiration.
